Your main, first objective should be to reach the Undead Parish Bonfire. Then establish a link back to Firelink Shrine and finally, defeat the Belfry Gargoyles and ring the bell.

The Undead Parish is connected to the Darkroot Garden, Sen's Fortress, Undead Burg and Firelink Shrine. Important NPC's are the Blacksmith Andre of Astora, Oswald of Carim and Knight Lautrec of Carim. It is also possible to summon Solaire of Astora before the Belfry Gargoyles encounter.

A Bit of Detail

Standing in front of you (if you enter from Undead Burg) is the Armored Tusk. Do not attack just yet, instead, go around on the right. Drop from the walkway behind and aim for a backstab. There are some stairs down and a Portcullis in front. You need to reach the other side of that Portcullis and open it.

Head down the stairs and pick-up the Mystery Key then work your way through to the Parish grounds until you end up at the Portcullis, pick-up the Basement Key and open the gate. While it is possible to enter the Parish, it is far better to go around. Head back and over a rough looking short wooden bridge. Take the path away from the Church and locate the Bonfire.

Under the Bonfire is Blacksmith Andre and he is well worth visiting.

Just inside the Parish is a Heavy Knight, a Channeler and a few lower level undeads. Get the Knight outside (not hard to do) and fight in the open. Clear out the inside of Church and pick-up the Fire Keeper Soul on the altar.

Opposite the side entrance is a the lift down to Firelink Shrine. Next to the lift are some steps that head up. Right at the back and above the altar is a breakable wall. Follow this and you will find a trapped Knight Lautrec of Carim. The Mystery Key will unlock the door.

Up some ladders at the other end you will reach the Fog Gate to the Belfry Gargoyles battle. Just before the gate, if you are in Human form, is the summon sign for Solaire of Astora and on the ledge below, in the far corner is that of Knight Lautrec of Carim (if freed).

Attack the tail of the first Belfry Gargoyle for the Gargoyle Tail Axe. It is easier to do without locking onto your target. After your battle, continue along the roof and up the tower to the Bell.

On your way down you will meet Oswald of Carim. Now is a good time to buy a Purging Stone.
